Within the past five years, amniotic membrane transplantation has emerged as an important clinical advance to facilitate management of serve ocular surface disorders by improving ocular surface reconstructive surgery (e. g. limbal transplantation) and by stimmulating healing of persistent corneal epithelium defects and ulceration. Thus the basic investigated studies proposed here should provide an important extension of our mechanistic understanding conceving this already established clinical therapy. Moreover, the additional information provided by these experiment should further advance our knowledge of the important role of inflammatory cells in the clinical relevant area of ocular surface diseases.
