Final Report Abstract

In this project, we have performed experiments on underdamped arrays of Nb-Al/AlOx-Nb Josephson junctions. There came two major new discoveries: (i) spontaneous creation of discrete breathers and (ii) dynamic fusion of pairs of solitons having the same polarity. The progress on the spectroscopy of Josephson plasmons using breathers and fluxons was also rather significant and investigated in detail within the PhD thesis of Marcus Schuster, which he completed and defended in Erlangen in 2004. In the quantum regime, the progress was significantly slower than we initially expected due to rather short energy relaxation time T1 in Josephson phase qubits achievable to date. It might be possible to move here further on the quantum front once we manage to significantly improve T1 times in our phase qubits.
