MALDI-TOF-TOF Mass Spectrometer

Subject Area Polymer Research
Term Funded in 2023
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 524610847

Modern polymer analysis requires high-resolution mass spectrometric techniques to analytically record the complexity of these molecules, both during synthesis and during their degradation. This applies, for example, to the sequence within polymer chains, the chain length (both in the case of synthetic and biological polymers), as well as the analysis of the chain structures, being of great importance in the context of the current SFB initiatives as well as the planned excellence initiative, where omplex structure/property relationships are to be analyzed. The MALDI-TOF-TOF MS applied for here replaces a device purchased 15 years ago, which has already exceeded its service life and is noticeable due to high repair/maintenance costs as well as reduced usability and already relatively low measuring accuracy. The newly purchased device has more modern technology, such as the TOF/TOF technology for the analysis of complex fragmentations and thus a more precise and detail-oriented structural analysis. MS analysis of polymers/macromolecules via MS spectroscopy, especially MALDI-TOF, is a standard methodology with great potential for expansion. It enables the determination of the exact molecular weight of high-molecular molecules, in resolution down to the isotope pattern, so that precise analysis of the composition, the chemical identity and the sequence of macromolecules is possible. This makes complex substance structures accessible both in terms of chemical structure and chemical-biological degradation, and the underlying mechanisms are understandable and therefore controllable. The device is directly integrated into the ongoing SFB TRR 102, the ongoing graduate school, as well as the ongoing third-party funded activities embedded in the group. The device is strategically central for the requested SFB initiatives as well as the SFB preliminary application SFB-TRR 382 as well as the planned application outline within the framework of the Federal Excellence Initiative. These initiatives are part of the planned excellence program that is being developed transregionally with the universities of Jena/Potsdam/Bayreuth. The aim of this program should be directed towards new aspects of the sustainability of polymers. In addition, research activities are to be located around the new Center of Sustainable Materials (CSME), wherein the MALDI-TOF-TOF will be integrated into the planned analytical unit.
