The aim of the project is a detailed analysis of the secular variations of the earth's magnetic field during the last 100 ka as recorded in marine and lacustrine sediments, in order to obtain information of the dynamics of the Earth's magnetic field. Based on the high sedimentation rates in lake sediments a time resolution of 200 to 500 years is expected. The data analysis will be focussed on a local, regional and global comparison of features in palaeosecular variation (PSV) records from sites all over the world. Magnetostratigraphic investigations will additionally be performed on sediment cores from Lama Lake, North Siberia, Dead Sea, Israel and Lake Baikal, East Siberia in order to enlarge the data base suitable for the investigations planned. Inter-lake correlation will not only be based on the PSV records but also on the records of relative paleointensity. Therefore the paleomagnetic investigations from the Asian sites mentioned will be completed by the determination of rockmagnetic parameters.
