Final Report Abstract

The aim of this project was the investigation of Neoproterozoic, Early Palaeozoic and Ceonozoic geomagnetic reversals. Using palaeomagnetism, the morphology of these reversals and their main features, such as the duration of the process, the mode of the geomagnetic component changes, and the symmetry (or asymmetry) of the process with respect to polarity and time was studied. Detailed palaeomagnetic analyses of the Lower Jaramillo transition have provided a remarkable record of this transition zone. The analysis of Vendian age samples collected from NW Russia also provided important results and resulted in two international publications. Field work was also carried out in Cambro-Ordovician sequences in Siberia to study the character of the reversing field in early Palaeozoic times. All the proposed sections are known to carry primary directions of magnetisation, they span different reversals, and sedimentation rates are suitable for detailed study of the SV and transitional periods. However, the magnetisation of these rocks proved complex and dominated by remagnetisation and work progressed using existing sample sets of Russian colleagues.
