The proposed research in the period 2000 to 2002 begins to cover the topic of polyelectrolytes in poor solvent close to surfaces and in restricted geometry. Before this directions are started several open points concerning the bulk properties of polyelectrolytes in good solvent (water) have to be finalized. These final points concern the statics and dynamics of polyampholytes and polymeric salts. The question of the existence of frozen states (of spinglass types) has not been solved yet. After, it is planned to work out poor solvent properties. These concern necklace structures in their single chain state, networks (and microgels) in poor solvent and their resulting elastic properties, close to surfaces and in restricted geometry. The research on networks are guided by recent discussions molecular function and responsive gels. The work on polyelectrolyte chains close to surfaces, their adsorption behavior, their two dimensional properties and in restricted geometries will be able to predict results for atomic force microscopy (AFM) and adsorption experiments. We will in all these different situations study as well the effects of the counterion condensation, where we expect strong conformational changes under certain circumstances.
