Studying death decision-making between ferroptotic and apoptotic cell death (B06)

Targeting the outer mitochondrial membrane by pro-apoptotic members of the BCL-2 family is not only critical during intrinsic apoptosis, but mitochondrial membrane changes appear also to be critical during ferroptosis. This project will investigate how mitochondrial apoptosis induction by BH3 mimetics interacts with the ferroptosis pathway. Targeting individual known components of the signaling pathways, it will map the activities of the pathways more precisely and address whether sub-lethal activities in the pathways may synergize to arrive at the decision to undergo cell death.
