This project aims to better understand how autoimmune diseases affect certain types of immune cells (B and T cells) in the body, particularly in patients with ANCA-associated vasculitis (AAV), which can lead to kidney damage. We will compare autoreactive B and T cells (which attack the body's own tissues) with protective B and T cells and examine their behavior under different conditions, treatments, and after vaccination. We will also look for ways to selectively target the autoreactive cells to protect the kidneys. We will use flow cytometry and single cell sequencing techniques and will examine animal models and human kidney biopsies. The goal is to develop new, more targeted treatments for AAV that will protect patients from the harmful side effects of current immunosuppressive therapies.
