Edirom Online Reloaded – Community-Driven Re-usability and Sustainability

Subject Area Musicology
Term since 2023
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 528827243

Edirom Online is the only tool for presenting historical-critical music editions that is not project-specific and can therefore be used for all edition projects. Edirom is used by most of the more recent long-term projects in the Academies' Programme. The projects, some of which run until 2045, depend on Edirom Online being available for the long term. Since Edirom Online could only be further developed on a voluntary basis in recent years, the software has aged considerably. Edirom Online is essentially based on a Javascript framework that was released in 2012. Edirom Online is to be renewed and improved as part of the project. The technologies used are to be retained in order to keep the maintenance effort as low as possible. Therefore, only an update of the framework versions is necessary. In this context, the backend and the frontend are to be separated from each other and the views for musical or textual objects integrated in the frontend are to be detached and developed separately as web components. This offers the advantage that individual components of the software can be integrated into websites or living publications, for example. In addition to updating the technical frameworks, the documentation is also to be greatly improved in order to simplify both joint development in the community and the use of the software. The community is to be strengthened and a concept for further development after the end of the project is to be established. The software developed in the project will be published under an open source licence and made available according to the FAIR4RS criteria.
