The project investigates the role of galectins, a group of immuno-regulatory glycoproteins in the pathogenesis of neovascular and inflammatory retinal diseases with a focus on age-related macular degeneration (AMD). By using experimental mouse models, human ocular biospecimens and in vitro experiments, we aim to clarify whether galectins are suitable targets for immunomodulatory therapeutic approaches for the treatment of AMD.
