Replacement procurement: 200 MHz Solid-State NMR Spectrometer

Subject Area Physical Chemistry
Term Funded in 2023
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 530325402

The procurement involves of a 200 MHz solid-state NMR spectrometer and a number of NMR probes in addition to dedicated temperature equipment, enabling experiments in a broad temperature range. The spectrometer consists of a 200 MHz WB NMR magnet and a digital two-channel NMR console. The NMR probes include three different MAS rotor sizes and a static NMR probe suitable for experiments in a broad temperature range. A key scientific area is the characterisation of transport properties of Li+ and Na+ in solid electrolytes as applied in solid-state batteries via variable-temperature 6/7Li and 23Na NMR experiments. This provides information on ion transport and the associated activation energies for setting up structure-property relationships. For lithium-ion batteries a particular focus is on the application of different anode and cathode-materials and their impact on the electrochemical performance as followed by in situ and operando NMR experiments. This includes the characterisation of Li-ion dynamics via 6/7Li NMR and studies of lithiation products and intermetallic phases, utilising static ultra-wideline WCPMG NMR experiments.
