Subject Area History of Philosophy

Term since 2023
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 530495411

No other German tradition of thought has had as great an influence on 20th century philosophy as phenomenology. Although the reception of this philosophical movement in European and non-European countries has been the subject of research for many years, the study of the emergence and history of phenomenology in Italy remains a desideratum of 20th century historiography of philosophy, especially in the German-speaking world. The present project sets out to fill this gap and thus facilitate a long overdue exchange between Italian and German interpretations of phenomenology. Specifically, the project has three goals: First, to produce a handbook on Italian phenomenology that will serve as a comprehensive introduction to the subject and can be used as a reference work. Second, to organize a conference on Italian phenomenology that will foster exchange among the various actors in the movement and develop new research approaches. And third, a digital workshop on Italian phenomenology will be established, serving as a platform for the exchange of ideas and materials, as well as providing an opportunity to learn about ongoing projects and initiate new collaborations. Overall, the project contributes to the appreciation of the importance of Italian phenomenology within the history of philosophy and to the promotion of dialogue between different countries and cultures. It facilitates an interdisciplinary exchange between philosophers from Italy and German-speaking countries and thus also supports the internationalization of philosophical research. The creation of a digital workshop also provides a contemporary format that meets the needs of a globally networked science.
