Exploitation of SWOT for coastal and freshwater dynamics application

Subject Area Geodesy, Photogrammetry, Remote Sensing, Geoinformatics, Cartography
Term since 2024
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 530975318

In the COSWOT project, we evaluate the scientific usability of the fully new data of the SWOT (Surface Waters and Ocean Topography) satellite altimetry mission in the coastal zone. Our focus will be on small-scale processes in the transition zone from land to sea, as well as in the estuaries. We also want to improve our understanding of the coastal water cycle, including extreme events. For this purpose, various data products of the SWOT instruments are to be analyzed in COSWOT and compared and merged with measurements from other satellite altimeter missions, for which we have an excellent understanding of the data quality. In addition, the merged data products are to be compared with in-situ and with modeling results. Altogether we will look at three regions: the Baltic Sea where a large in-situ data network is available, the waters around Indonesia, as well as the Bay of Bengal.
