The genome of Halobacterium salinarum is the first sequenced genome of an extremely halophilic archaon and ready for exploitation. A database will be established which connects all genomic, transcriptomic and proteomic data and is itself connected to existing external structural and metabolic pathway databases. The bioinformatic structure of the database will allow research on the biochemistry and physiology of the organism once a complete inventory of all proteins has been established and the functional annotation of the largest possible number of them achieved. A specific aim is to analyse changes of the proteome upon stimulation by external signals, specifically by light. The database will be publicly accessible and should allow international communication and collaboration of all research groups interested in halophilism. We ask for support for proteomic analysis and for establishment of the bioinformatic infrastructure of the database.
