Investigation of the influence of the manufacturing process on the properties of vitrified bonded diamond grinding wheels

Subject Area Metal-Cutting and Abrasive Manufacturing Engineering
Term since 2024
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 531806990

Many factors affect the grinding behavior of grinding tools. Besides the process parameters of grinding and dressing, the grinding layer composition and the related manufacturing process influences the grinding process in a significant manner. Because of the numerous interdependencies during the manufacturing process, these complex interactions are not entirely understood. The selection of raw materials (bond, grain specification) for instance has a crucial impact on what grinding layer properties can be adjusted. However, the final determination of the mechanical properties takes place during sintering. Because of this, this research proposal aims at the systematic investigation of the interrelations between the properties of the raw materials, the individual steps of the grinding tool manufacturing process, the grinding tool properties and the grinding behavior of the final grinding tools. For this purpose, the manufacturing process chain for grinding tools will be examined step-by-step, so that effects during the application can be traced to specific steps of the manufacturing process, thus building the foundation for the knowledge based manufacturing of grinding tools.
