Functional investigation of the healthy and diseased brain - studies of perfusion, metabolism, and structure by magnetic resonance imaging at 3T

Fachliche Zuordnung Nuklearmedizin, Strahlentherapie, Strahlenbiologie
Förderung Förderung von 2002 bis 2007
Projektkennung Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Projektnummer 5318850

The application is motivated by the need for technically improved NMR research facilities. One of the keys to the success of our previous efforts over the last couple of years has been the immediate vicinity of all cooperation colleagues from the University and the Max-Planck-Institute that has faciliated close and intense interactions. We share the conviction that NMR has become a crucial technology for studying brain function and that the pursuit of our research requires higher sensitivity and spatiotemporal resolution. Previous success and future potential of our neuroscientific research site have been acknowledged in that the Max-Planck-Society has guaranteed a financial contribution of DM 1 Mio. to a new 3T scanner, the board of the university hospital has endorsed on-site installation and guaranteed maintenance costs, and the Volkswagen Foundation as Germany's largest privat research foundation has assigned a five year fMRI research grant to the Dept. of Neuroloy. The Institute of Neuroradiology will provide technical expertise and manpower and cover the hub function for external collaborations. The internal collaborations dwill focus on research projects dettailed below that range from animal models of cognition and stroke to higher cognitive functions in humans and their disturbance in neurological and psychiatric patients. our neuroscientific research constortium bridges the gap between clinical neuroscience and basic research by joining forces of the university hospital with the Max-Planck-Institute for Brain Research and with the Large Scale Facility for Biomolecular NMR (LSF) of the European Commission located at Frankfurt University.
