The Production of Climate Flight as an Occasion for Theorisation (C04)

The project investigates the production of spaces of migrant disappearance in the maritime zone of the Atlantic Ocean between West/North Africa and the Canary Islands. Based on interviews and ethnographic observations in Senegal, Morocco and Spain, the project analyses this production as a conflictive negotiation process that involves attempts by states to invisibilise the phenomenon, for example by not recording disappeared migrants, as well as attempts by non-state actors to visibilise the issue. The project also examines cultures of protest and commemoration that seek to produce societal and political relevance concerning migrant disappearances.
