Genomic and functional underpinning of reaction norms of the leaf-economic spectrum across environmental gradients (B03)

B3 (Linstädter, Lenhard) will study plasticity of leaf morphology and function to nitrogen levels, and in parallel to temperature in Arabidopsis. Ecologically relevant variation in leaf traits can be described by the leaf economics spectrum (LES) as a measure for multiple correlated leaf traits. This project will ask how plastic LES traits are in response to environmental cues, and whether the environment can modify LES trait correlations, or whether these correlations constrain plasticity of the individual traits. The molecular basis of variation in LES plasticity will be identified by quantitative genetics and its adaptive value will be studied in A. thaliana.
