This project aims at the development of new optimization strategies for the synthesis and optimal design of combined reaction distillation processes. For this, discrete decision variables play an important role. In contrast to previous work, focus is on global optimization using suitably simplified process models, where the nonlinearities are approximated for example by piecewise linear functions or polynomials. Synthesis and optimal design of reactive distillation processes requires suitable optimization and modeling strategies. In this project, focus is on application and modeling issues including selection of suitable example processes, process modeling, model approximation and reduction, development of feasible superstructures for kinetically as well as equilibrium controlled chemical reactions, rigorous optimization, verification of the optimal solution by means of simulation methods and comparison with results obtained from standard local optimization methods using rigorous process models.
