Optimization and first applications of a compact, high-repetition rate, ultrashort hard-x-ray and electron source based on the combination of femtosecond lasers with an x-ray diode

The primary aim of this research project are investigations of possibilities to generate ultrashort x-ray pulses (with a pulse duration below 10 ps) by combining femtosecond lasers with a specially designed x-ray tube. In a first step, ultrashort electron pulses will be generated via femtosecond photoemission from a photocathode. Then, the electron pulses will be accelerated towards a high-Z target material by applying an external electric field over a short distance. Hard-x-rays will be produced via Bremsstrahlung and characteristic line emission. In this project measurements and optimization of the hard-x-ray pulse duration using advanced streak camera and pulse shaping techniques will be performed. These investigations will allow to develop a new, compact, high-repetition rate x-ray source for studies of ultrafast transient processes in condensed matter. This femtosecond laser-driven x-ray source will provide an important alternative to the existing laboratory x-ray sources and will eventually be used for time-resolved studies of transient phenomena in condensed matter.
