Imaging flow cytometer

Subject Area Basic Research in Biology and Medicine
Term Funded in 2024
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 538039930

For a comprehensive and detailed understanding of molecular processes in living cells, quantitative analysis of the localization and dynamics of molecules, taking into account phenotypic heterogeneity at the single cell level, is essential. The proposed imaging flow cytometer with high-resolution camera detection allows simultaneous localization of different fluorescent dyes at the subcellular level and high-throughput recording of cell and organelle morphology. The instrument thus opens up completely new possibilities for multispectral analysis of heterogeneous cell mixtures at the single cell level and is particularly needed by research groups at the Faculties of Chemistry and Biochemistry, Biology and Biotechnology, and Medicine for the analysis of intracellular protein and lipid transport, quantification of exocytotic, endocytotic and phagocytotic processes, as well as toxicity determination of chemical compound on mammalian cells, protozoan parasites and microbial communities. The shared use of the instrument is expected to intensify the establishment of joint projects and scientific exchange on campus. An imaging flow cytometer is not yet available at the Ruhr-University Bochum.
