This proposal aims to investigate the upper crust at the San Andreas fault in Parkfield, sampling the fault in the seismogenic region at the location of a deep drill hole planned for 2002. The main target of the proposed experiment is the investigation of the shear wave propagation in the region along a 50 km long line. Using borehole shots for S-wave generation and three-component seismic sensors we will collect a data set suitable for high resolution imaging by tomographic techniques. The interpretation of the proposed investigation will result in structural information on the upper 5 km of the crust. In particular, the exact location of the fault at depth and the fine structure in its vicinity will be of great importance for the interpretation of the drilling results. The proposed experiment, design and layout of the field measurements will be carried out in close cooperation with J. Hole (NSF proposal, already funded).
