The interesting soft magnetic properties of multicomponent (Fe, Co) based bulk metallic glasses (BMGs) have been a great stimulus for research regarding their synthesis and physical properties. The purpose of the project is to develop new (Fe, Co)-based BMGs with improved glass-forming ability and good soft magnetic properties, and to understand the effect of preparation and processing conditions such as quenching rate, degree of overheating the melt prior to casting, melt purification by fluxing treatment, relaxation, nanocrystallization and stoichiometry variations/additions (e.g. P) on the phase formation and the resulting magnetic properties including domain structures. In addition, it is of interest to study the influence of external conditions like high pressure, low temperature, and external magnetic field on structure formation and the magnetic properties of the material. An additional motivation for the study is to determine how the soft magnetic properties of multicomponent BMGs compare to other conventional metallic glasses which require higher critical cooling rate for glass formation. Therefore, samples with different size and geometry will be prepared at different quenching rates in order to determine the correlation between phase formation, microstructure and soft magnetic properties.
