Zusammenfassung der Projektergebnisse

The project "Complex metallic alloys: Structure, defects and mechanical properties" was funded within the framework of the programme "Modern metallic materials design" in close collaboration with the Chinese the partners Prof. Z. Zhang and Prof. K.H. Kuo, Beijing Laboratory of Electron Microscopy, and R. Wang, Wuhan University. Complex metallic alloys (CMAs) represent a new and emerging field in materials science. The properties, in particular concerning plasticity, defects and the corresponding structure/property relations, are essentially unknown. The project focused on the experimental investigation of the structure, defects and plastic deformation properties in this class of materials. In the first funding period the investigations of plasticity and defects were spread over a rather broad range of different CMAs. Transmission electron microscopy studies were performed on defects in orthorhombic ^'-AI-Pd-Mn, cubic c2- AI-Pd-Fe, orthorhombic AI13Co4 and cubic ß-AI3Mg2 and corresponding plastic deformation tests were carried out. In the second funding period the focus was laid on a novel type of defect, characteristic of CMAs, the metadislocations. We investigated the formation of metadislocation networks and were able to demonstrate the involvement of metadislocations in phase transformations. The mode of metadislocation motion was identified - it could be shown that metadislocations are prismatic edge loops moving by pure climb. We investigated theoretically the existence of metadislocations in other materials and, as a result of the corresponding experimental investigations, were able to identify novel types of metadislocation in orthorhombic Ali3Co4, in Taylor phases and in s-AI-Pd-Fe. The success of the project is reflected by the high number of scientific publications. The results obtained within the framework of the project was published in eight papers in refereed highstandard journals and presented in nine oral contributions (two invited orals) on German and International conferences.
