We investigate mathematical models of large spatially extended populations with individual reproduction and migration. It is well known that in classical branching population models, where individuals have offspring completely indepenently, there exist no non-trivial equilibria in spatial dimensions 1 and 2, even if the mean offspring number per individual is one. As many biological species lieve in a more or less two-dimensional environment, the question if interactions between nearby individuals can stabilize the population in the long run is natural and translates into intriguing mathematical problems.
