Zusammenfassung der Projektergebnisse

In this project, some central aspects of narrative generation from a knowledge base through a hierarchically organised set of rules reflecting both language-independent and language-specific narrative planning principles were reconstructed in the formal framework of Discourse Representation Theory. Moreover, a formal explanation of the influence of grammar on global narrative planning decisions has been developed using a combination of DRT and Optimality Theory. Additional empirical support for the emerging model has been found in the study on the acquisition of narrative skills by German children and teenagers between the ages of 7 and 14. These results make an original contribution to the general theory of discourse structure and generation.
