This project focusses on magnetic properties of mass-selected pure metal and alloy clusters deposited onto non-magnetic and ferromagnetic surfaces. However, only very few studies on mass-selected species on defined well-surfaces have so far been carried out. In the first period we concentrate on the size range from 4 nm to 15 nm. The clusters will be produced using an ultrahigh vacuum compatible arc cluster ion source in combination with an electrostatic quadrupole deflector as mass filter. Laboratory-based MOKE measurements serve to determine magnetic properties of clusters in contact with non-magnetic surfaces. Using the element-specific photoabsorption spectroscopy and reflectivity with circularly polarized soft X-ray radiation at the storage ring BESSY we gain access to the magnetic spin and orbital moments.
