Zusammenfassung der Projektergebnisse

The two ionic liquids [Py1,4]TFSA and [EMIM]TFSA exhibit biphasic behaviour in the AlCl3 concentration range from 1.6 to 2.5 molL-1 and 2.5 to 5 mol L-1, respectively. In the case of the ionic liquid [Py1,4]TFSA, shiny, dense and adherent deposits with very fine crystallites in the nanometer regime (less than 50 nm) are obtained and the particle size is temperature independent. Moreover the electrodeposition process is partially reversible. The Au(111) surface is subject to restructuring / reconstruction in this ionic liquid. In the case of the ionic liquid [EMIM]TFSA, coarse cubic-shaped aluminium particles in the micrometer range are obtained and the electrodeposition process is completely reversible as was evidenced from STM and EQCM results. The electrodeposition process exhibits clearly Al UPD. Furthermore there is a clear evidence also for surface alloying of Al with Au at the early stages of deposition. The particle size increases significantly with increasing temperature. A very thin, mirrorlike aluminium film containing very fine crystallites of about 20 nm is obtained in the ionic liquid (P14,6,6,6 TFSA) at 25 °C. The electrodeposition process is completely reversible. We believe that these results show the enormous potential of ionic liquids in the electrodeposition of nanocrystalline metals and alloys. It seems that in some ionic liquids it is not necessary to apply pulse-plating or using brighteners in order to make nanocrystalline deposits. As far as we know we have found this effect as the first ones.
