Flow past hydrophobic rough surface: Experiment, theory and simulation

Micro- and nanofluidic devices for manipulating fluids are widespread and are finding uses in many scientific and industrial contexts. Their design and small length scale introduce new research questions and themes to consider, first of all the impact of surface phenomena in controlling the flow. The present project focuses on the combined effect of roughness and (partial) wettability on the flow. These circumstances should lead to interesting modification of old hydrodynamic problems and new flow responses. In the experimental part of the project we will first (i) design the model surfaces for investigation with the controlled nanoroughness and wetting properties. Since many traditional techniques of measuring fluid behavior are not suitable for research of micro and nanoflow, we will use new high-precision quantitative methods recently developed in our group, namely (ii) thin film drainage measurements with the specially adapted atomic force microscopes and surface force apparatus, and (iii) double focus confocal fluorescence cross correlation. In the theoretical part of the project we will model the main flow-determing phenomena, provide description of experimental configurations and observed phenomena, and develop a number of useful approimations.
