The proposed research project aims at control of dissipative micro-to-nanostructure formation in ultrathin films (quasi two-dimensional films with thickness of nm order), and their application as fluidic channels. In the first part of the project, we will focus on the dynamics of dissipative structure formation, such as (1) viscous fingers and holes in polymer/surfactant films, and (2) "micro/nano-channels" in lipid/lipopolymer monolayers. Dynamic changes in the local thickness profile in the vicinity of the three phase contact line will be monitored by (in-situ) imaging ellipsometry. In the second part, we will explore the technological application of such structures in micro-fluidics. Here, we target the localization of membrane proteins in "self-assembled fluidic channels" for the directed transport.
