Investigation of the influence of new active remote sensing instruments on numerical weather prediction models

Subject Area Atmospheric Science
Term from 2004 to 2011
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 5427048

Lidar measurements of highly resolved water vapour and wind fields have been performed by DLR along extended flights in recent international field campaigns. In this project, these data will be processed, analysed and prepared for use in numerical simulations. In the first phase, selected case studies combining the data and numerical simulations will be performed to characterise the tropospheric water vapour distribution in the convective boundary layer and in the upper troposphere. Strategies are developed how lidar observations of water vapour and wind can be utilised to improve the quantitative precipitation forecast. In the second phase (years 3+) targeted lidar measurements will be performed in the field phase of the priority programme "QPF".
