An important insight gained during the developments in string theory since the mid nineties is that open string degrees of freedom, including gauge fields, live on branes which are in turn classical solutions in closed string theory. The reversed phenomenon, that is, closed strings in terms of classical solutions in open string theory has not been understood properly so far. The present project proposes to investigate this relation in detail. From this analysis we expect to gain a better understanding of the fundamental structure underlying gauge fields and strings and, in particular, the relation between gauge theory and gravity. Further motivation comes from recent progress in open string tachyon condensation on unstable D-branes which suggests that the true vacuum of unstable D-branes is in fact described in terms of closed strings. The appropriate tool to address the vacuum structure in string theory is open string field theory which to date is formulated properly only in specific backgrounds. Understanding string field theory in non-trivial backgrounds is therefore the main technical problem we propose to solve in this proposal.
