The central aim of this project is a detailed study of the electrical and optical properties of cadmium sulphide (CdS) nanowires, in order to assess their potential for optoelectronic applications. Towards this end, a vapour phase growth process using a well-defined molecular precursor shall be optimised to produce high-quality single-crystalline CdS wires with lengths in the range of 10-20µm. Electrical measurements on single CdS wires will be performed in order to determine the influence of the contact metal, as well as the carrier mobility as a function of temperature. Moreover, optimisation of the photoluminescence properties of the wires shall be achieved via surface modifications involving the attachment of appropriate capping layers. For that purpose, it will be focused on an electrochemical deposition approach, which is expected to yield coatings of controllable thickness. Specifically, electropolymerised surface layers containing different types of functional groups shall be investigated with respect to their ability to enhance the luminescence efficiency and photo-stability of the wires.
