The miniaturisation of structurable components produced by means of conventional (top down) techniques leads to a number of insoluble technical problems. Methods for the direct synthesis of nanostructures, such as nanotubes and nanowires (bottom up) are, however, technically possible. These can either be directly produced, or a template (host structure) can be used for their growth. A promising method for the realisation of these nanostructures is the production of Metal/Carbon Core-Shell nanostructures through the galvanic surface coating of Carbon-Nano-Tubes (CNTs) or Carbon-Nano-Bells (CNBs) with metals such as Cu or Ni. Additionally, these CNTs can, during their production, be filled in a controlled manner with metals (Cu, Ni) by means of a co-deposition process. In this way, nanostructural composite tubes (Me/C) and composite wires (C/Me) can be generated. Furthermore, the Carbon structures can subsequently be removed using an etching process, leaving metallic nanotubes or nanowires as the end product. A range of advantages with respect to mechanical stability, electrical conductivity, and optical properties, is expected to be demonstrated in these interesting materials. In this project proposal, the above mentioned possibilities for the controlled production of nanowires and nanotubes (composite, or purely metallic) are to be examined, and the range of parameters significant to their production identified. A parallel and fundamental characterisation of the structures produced, established by means of the combined use of a range of analytical methods, is to form the conclusion of the programme.
