Zusammenfassung der Projektergebnisse

A high-resolution study of stable carbon isotopes and calcareous nannofossils has been made for the Cenomanian-Turonian boundary interval of Sites 1258, 1259, 1260, and 1261. Seven nannofossil-bioevents have been identified and correlated with the carbon isotope curves. The significant decrease in relative abundance of the oligotrophic species Watznaueria barnesiae going along with an increase in the eutrophic species Zeugrhabdothus erectus during the δ13Corg excursion, show that the OAE 2 was a period of enhanced productivity. Nannofossil findings throughout the Cenomanian and Turonian at Site 1260, show high fertility surface-water conditions in the lower Cenomanian, as indicated by high relative abundances of Biscutum constans. A major turnover of the nannoflora took place in the mid-Cenomanian event, evoked by the implementation of saline deep-waters and thus increased stratification of the watercolumn, culminating during OAE2.
