The project “A probabilistic approach for incorporating small-scale gas-particle thermochemistry into DEM/CFD models of granular assemblies” (Sewerin) develops a probabilistic methodology for predicting the mean gas composition on the large scale while accounting for small-scale heterogeneity of the interstitial gas. Besides eliminating the common assumption of small-scale homogeneity, the method minimizes the dependency of model predictions on the resolved length scale. The gas composition within a large-scale control volume will be characterized by a probability density function for which an evolution equation coupled with the DEM will be formulated. The project will deliver to another project a scheme for advancing the large-scale gas composition on a CFD grid in time.
