Strong regional differences in ozone reductions are due to large-scale transport by planetary waves. Hence, during 1st and 2nd phase of project, we diagnosed observed zonally asymmetric ozone and its effects in order to improve our understanding of the links between the related radiation perturbations and dynamics. The results lead to new important questions. We found a nearly linear increase of planetary wave one structure in ozone during 1960-2000, but the processes leading to this increase are unknown up to now. We plan to clear up this question by model process studies including linear ozone transport and linear ozone-dynamic feedback. We found also a surprisingly strong contribution of related radiation perturbations to long-term changes in temperature and planetary waves. It is very important to extend these investigations based on recently released observational data (assimilations, measurements), but also based on recent data of Chemistry Climate Models (CCMs) used within the DFG SPP CAWSES and within international CCM validation activity. We plan to diagnose the effects of planetary wave structures in ozone but also in other important tracers (stratospheric aerosol), including effects of solar variability and ocean’s surface temperature variability. At least our project will contribute to the improvement of CCMs used for future IPCC scenarios.
