Mesoscale Acoustics on Soft Matter systems

Fachliche Zuordnung Experimentelle Physik der kondensierten Materie
Förderung Förderung von 2005 bis 2008
Projektkennung Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Projektnummer 5453297

This project is part of an international interdisciplinary materials research collaboration between Europe (University of Leipzig, Germany; ENS Cahan, France), and the U.S.A (University of Arizona, Tucson; University of Central Florida, Orlando). The two main objectives of this project are: a) (theoretically) further develop the Distributed Point Source Method (DPSM), and adapt it optimally to phase-sensitive acoustic microscopy (PSAM) applications to soft matter, and b) (experimentally) verify and apply the developed model and associated technology in investigating: i) supported synthetic and biological thin films, (modeled as ultrasonic field encountering an interface), and ii) colloidal systems: colloidal biomaterial, magneto-vesicles, polymeric micro-spheres (vesicles with ultrasound contrast agents). The resulting DPSM-PSAM technology would provide a leading platform technique for nondestructive surface and subsurface characterization of soft matter mechanical and structural properties. The technology would allow for more effective and efficient materials characterization. The project will also promote research training, learning and international exchange of students and scientists.
