This project targets the combination of the fields of atom optics and nanophotonics with the goal of a novel waveguide based on hollow photonic bandgap fibers. Using air guiding photonic bandgap fibers we want to overcome the limitations of standard dipole potential based atom guiding schemes and realize and characterize a homogeneous, tight and long distance atom guide. During the first funding period we will concentrate on high flux loading schemes as well as the diagnosis of guiding properties. A particular goal will be the investigation and development of efficient cooling schemes for the guided atoms, which in the long term open intriguing projects for applications in integrated atom interferometers and possibly a cw coherent matter wave source.
