SFB 193:  Biologische Behandlung industrieller und gewerblicher Abwässer

Subject Area Biology
Term from 1991 to 2001
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 5472381

The aim of the research is to obtain basic knowledge, which is necessary for the development of new biological processes or combination processes in wastewater treatment and for the improvement of known processes by optimal process control. On the basis of interdisciplinary research the development of new processes is supported in the industrial wastewater treatment. Primarily biological processes are preferred in the wastewater treatment due to the need of very few additional chemicals and the less problematic discharge of surplus sludge compared to the pollutant concentrates from chemical-physical processes. Therefore, an integration of known or new chemical-physical processes is included for pollutants destruction or separation as a pre- or post-treatment of a biological treatment step. In recent years the main focus concentrates on measures for reuse of process water and recovery of products by chemical-physical processes. In principle the process water and product recycling by suitable combinations is favored to the extensive wastewater treatment. In order to solve these complex problems, chemists, biologists and engineers from different disciplines cooperate in 16 research projects. In the project "knowledge transfer" access is provided to the experiences and data of the collaborative research centre 193 for interested scientists and for the practical use on an international level.
