SFB 196:  Physics and Chemistry of Optical Films

Subject Area Physics
Term from 1993 to 2002
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 5472481

The central topic involves physical and chemical studies of relations between structure and properties of thin, nano-structured films for optical or optoelectronic applications. Basic materials are polytypes of silicon carbide and nonlinear-optical polymers. The formation of group-IV nanocrystallites, a local doping and the formation of waveguides are used to influence the spatial quantization of electrons or the localization of light. The research activities cover the synthesis of materials, the deposition and modification of layers, and their characterization with a variety of methods. They are accompanied by numerical simulations and theoretical interpretations of the effects in the systems studied. The attention is focused on linear and nonlinear optical properties including light emission, guiding and manipulation.
