SFB 294:  Moleküle in Wechselwirkung mit Grenzflächen

Subject Area Physics
Term from 1994 to 2002
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 5476458

The aim of the collaborative research centre 294 is the investigation and the deeper understanding of the influence of interfaces on the physical properties of molecular systems. The main interest is the study of the relationship between structure, dynamics and reactivity of molecules and molecular systems adsorbed on solid and fluid interfaces and the investigation of the dominant interaction mechanisms. Besides the application of the different methods of one- and two-dimensional solid state NMR-spectroscopy, PFG-NMR studies of transport properties and spatially resolved NMR techniques, numerous other experimental techniques are used, like dielectric spectroscopy, ESR spectroscopy, FTIR and Raman spectroscopy, AFM, neutron and X ray diffraction, ellipsometry, temperature-programmed adsorption and desorption. Theoretical studies include the statistical theory and simulations of molecular processes on interfaces, of the formation of structures in fluids and theoretical investigations to the concept of "molecular traffic control". The scope is a detailed study of fundamental questions. Furthermore, the results are used for the synthesis of new materials (zeolites, mesoporous molecular sieves, layered silicates) and the improvement of the material technology. The research projects are grouped into three project areas: "Structure and Characterization" (4 projects), "Dynamics and Reactivity" (9 projects) and "Theory and Simulations" (3 projects).
