SFB 418:  Structure and Dynamics of Nanoscopic Inhomogeneities in Condensed Matter

Subject Area Physics
Term from 1996 to 2008
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 5480264

The basic goal of the collaborative research centre is to encourage the interaction between groups working in experimental and theoretical physics and mainly doing materials-oriented research for analysing solids and soft matter. In particular, we are interested in studying processes down to the nanoscale range. Research activities are based on a wide variability of spectroscopic and imaging methods. Research accordingly aims at the successful elucidation of complex micro-processes in relation to a variety of properties characteristic for surfaces, interfaces, secondary phases, and special defects in thin film and composite systems. Experimental studies are complemented by a wide spectrum of theoretical methods in solid-state physics and statistical physics. Altogether, the collaborative research centre consists of sixteen subprojects, ten of which run at the Department of Physics, three at the Max Planck Institute of Microstructure Physics, two at the Department of Chemistry, and one at the Department of Engineering.
