SFB 436:  Metal Mediated Reactions modelled after Nature

Subject Area Chemistry
Term from 1997 to 2006
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 5481407

The goal of the collaborative research centre 436 is to understand the basic principles of enzymatic processes which have evolved over a very long evolutionary phase in order to employ these principles, using chemical intuition, in the development of new synthetical procedures or as key reaction sequences in catalytic reactions. Because of its economical and ecological efficiency, nature¿s model i.e. the mono functionality of metalloenzymes is employed here as a motive and also as an orientation help in order to study the activation and selective reactions of small, almost unreactive molecules like CO2, CO, O2, NO3- and N2. Metal complexes, simple models of enzyme reactive sites, are employed in order to recognize the desired substrate, activate it and transfer it selectively to target molecules. The collaborative research centre consists of 15 cooperating projects, 13 of which are based at the Friedrich-Schiller University, Jena.
