SFB 475:  Reduction of Complexity for Multivariate Data Structures

Subject Area Social and Behavioural Sciences
Term from 1997 to 2009
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 5481508

The main emphasis of the collaborative research centre 475 is focused on data-oriented statistical model building for complex systems and problems by making use of the interaction between methodological innovations on the one hand and data-intensive applications in life sciences, engineering and economics on the other. One area deals with the reduction of the masses of economic data generated on modern financial markets. Macroeconomics and forecasting also play a major rule in the projects. The new methods should make it possible to identify and trace distinct patterns in the development of stock-prices, for example. Another area of research deals with the statistical examination and modelling of medical phenomena and data from engineering. This includes online monitoring of both patient records in intensive care and production processes. The resulting new models should help to develop decision support systems for a quicker and even more accurate diagnosis as well as for process control.Researchers from the Departments of Statistics, Computer Science, Economics, Engineering, Mathematics, Biometrics, and Medicine at the universities of Dortmund, Essen, and Bochum as well as from the Institutes for Economic Research (RWI, Essen) and Occupational Physiology (IfADo, Dortmund) work together in this interdisciplinary research programme.
