SFB 547:  Cardiopulmonary Vasculature

Subject Area Medicine
Biology
Term from 1997 to 2009
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 5481739

Diseases of the heart and lungs play an outstanding role in this statistics of morbidity and lethality rates. Vascular changes are of essential pathogentic importance to both organs of the cardiopulmonary system. Both of these large intrathoracic organs are anatomically and functionally linked via the vascular bed. There are numerous interactions in acute as well as in chronical diseases of lung and heart, which can significantly influence the illness, and which have to be taken into consideration in therapeutic interventions. This collaborative research centre regards the problem of vascular functions and malfunctions in both of the large thoracic organs as a long-lasting scientific theme. Special attention is given to the similarities, differences and interactions of the vascular processes of the cardiopulmonary system. New strategies have to be developed for therapeutic influence of acute and chronical vascular disturbances of the lung and heart.
