In this collaborative research centre we will prepare, characterize and investigate experimentally and theoretically systems in which the physical properties can be tailored and are dominated by quantum effects. In particular we prepare quantum wires and dots, starting from layered molecular beam grown semiconductor heterostructures, we will fabricate hybride semiconductor/superconductor and semiconductor/ferromagnet systems, and, using wet chemical processes, semiconductor nanoclusters. The electronic properties of these quantum systems will be studied by transport, far infrared, photoluminescence and Raman spectroscopy, by scanning sensor methods and, theoretically by analytical and numerical methods.
