The fact that more than 30% of deaths worldwide are due to infectious diseases clearly reveals the great clinical relevance of microbial infections. In addition to those caused by newly emerging pathogens, genetic variations of known pathogens, the development of resistance to antibiotic drugs, and the increase in iatrogenic or acquired immunodeficiencies are the major obstacles in prevention and therapy of infectious diseases. It is the main object of the collaborative research centre 479 to contribute to the understanding of the highly dynamic, complex interactions between pathogens and their hosts in order to provide a deeper insight into pathogenesis, but also to provide the basis for improvement of diagnostic, preventive and therapeutic interventions. To achieve these goals, the collaborative research centre 479 consists of three closely related thematic priorities. (1) Studies on genetic variabilities of pathogens, their evolution, the emergence of new pathogenic variants and identifcation of their pathogenic determinants; (2) Studies on the pathomechanims during the interaction of pathogens with their hosts in order to define determinants of virulence, their targets and their mode of action; (3) Studies on the specific interaction of pathogens with the host¿s immune system which are the basis of the induction of specific and efficient immune responses, but also may allow the pathogen to survive and spread within its host by modulating immune functions.
