SFB 549:  Macromolecular Processing and Signalling in the Extracellular Matrix

Subject Area Biology
Term from 1998 to 2003
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 5482199

In this collaborative research ceantre we study, on the cellular and molecular level, the role of extracellular macromolecules or macromolecular complexes for cell-cell signalling in mammals, within plants, and in plant-pathogen interactions. The aim is to elucidate common mechanisms of signalling pathways during processes of development, morphogenesis, remodelling and during interaction with other organisms (pathogens or symbionts). Our research is aimed especially at the discovery of new extracellular signalling motifs and of releasing enzymes (proteases, proteinases - "sheddases" - and glycosidases) which participate in extracellular processing reactions. Their biological role will be studied by appropriate functional elimination experiments (antisense and knock- out experiments in plants and animals).
