The proposal consists of three individual but interconnected projects. The first project is devoted to Cartan-geometric description of well-known gravity theories and particle dynamics: its aim is to establish a common geometric framework which will simplify the following steps, and to study the appearing geometric field variables and how they allow for new modified theories. The second project is concerned with the Cartan-geometric description of modified gravity theories and particle dynamics: it builds upon and extends the first project. The third project deals with existence of Cauchy hypersurfaces in Finsler and Cartan geometric theories of gravity: it consists of the general study of such hypersurfaces in the aforementioned geometries, and then uses the results of the previous two projects to study the initial value problem in a wide range of gravity theories.
